How to check your installed Windows edition before buying a key
Before buying a Windows key, open Settings > System > About. Under Windows specifications, write down the Edition and Version, then check the Activation page for the current activation status. The edition—such as Home or Pro—is the field that must match the license you intend to use.
Write down these three details: Windows edition, Windows version, and activation status. Do not buy from the product name alone.

How to check on Windows 11
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select System, then About.
- Under Windows specifications, record the Edition and Version.
- Return to System, then open Activation.
- Record the edition shown there and the Activation state.

How to check on Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then About.
- Under Windows specifications, record the Edition and Version.
- To check activation, open Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
- Record the edition and activation message shown on that page.
Microsoft uses a different Activation path for Windows 10, but the edition-matching rule is the same. View Activate Windows.
Edition, version, system type, and activation are different

A product key is a 25-character code used for activation. A digital license is another activation method that does not require entering a product key. If Windows already reports that it is activated with a digital license, first establish why another key is needed.

What your result means before you buy
Your PC shows Windows Home
Choose a Home option only when you intend to keep and activate Home. If you want Pro, you are considering an edition change, not simply activating the edition already installed. Microsoft tells Home-to-Pro users to confirm both the installed edition and activation state before using the upgrade path. Do not assume every product labelled “Pro” supports a Home-to-Pro change; confirm the exact offer first.
Your PC shows Windows Pro
Choose a Pro option only when you intend to keep and activate Pro. A Home key is not a substitute for an installed Pro edition.
Your PC shows Enterprise, Education, Pro for Workstations, or another edition
Stop before choosing a Home or Pro key. Microsoft documents activation errors that occur when a product key is for a different Windows edition. Confirm the correct installation or edition-change route first.
Windows already shows as activated
You may not need another key. Record whether Settings mentions a digital license and whether it is linked to a Microsoft account, then identify the actual task—reinstallation, hardware change, edition change, or troubleshooting—before purchasing anything.
Windows is not installed yet
This check cannot choose an edition from an empty device. Decide which edition you intend to install and confirm that the device and product support that installation path before buying.

Before opening the product page
You should now be able to complete this sentence:
“I have or intend to install Windows [10 or 11] [Home, Pro, or another edition]. It is [activated or not activated], and my task is [matching-edition activation, reinstallation, edition change, or troubleshooting].”
If any bracket is uncertain, pause the purchase. That uncertainty is exactly what this check is designed to catch.
