Office compatibility checklist

How to check your Office version, device, and account requirements

Before buying or activating Office, record the exact Office product name, version/build, 32-bit or 64-bit type, device operating system, Microsoft account, required apps, and any existing Office installation. These details determine whether a key, one-time suite, or subscription account matches your setup.

Short answer: Open an Office app and check File > Account on Windows or About Word on Mac. Then inventory the device, account, apps, existing installations, and seller’s exact offer terms.

The seven-part record

PartExampleWhy it matters
Product nameMicrosoft 365, Office Home & Student 2021, Office Professional 2019Identifies subscription versus fixed suite and possible app set
Version/buildVersion 2606, build numberHelps diagnose updates and compatibility
Installation typeClick-to-Run or Microsoft StoreAffects coexistence and repair paths
Bitness32-bit or 64-bitMixed Office bitness cannot be installed together
Platform/OSWindows 11 or a specific macOS versionOffice support differs by platform and OS
AccountMicrosoft account or work/school accountControls redemption, installation, licensing, and services
Required appsOutlook, Access, Word, Excel, etc.The year alone does not prove an app is included

1. Find the Office product and version on Windows

  1. Open Word, Excel, or another Office app.
  2. Select File > Account. If Account is not shown, look for File > Help on older releases.
  3. Under Product Information, record the full product name.
  4. Record the version, build number, and installation type.
  5. Select About Word or the equivalent app to record 32-bit or 64-bit.

Do not shorten Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise, Office Home & Business 2021, or another exact name to simply Office. The exact product name carries licensing and app information.

Microsoft’s illustrated version-check instructions.

2. Find the Office product and license type on Mac

Open Word, choose Word > About Word, and record the version and displayed license type. Also record the macOS version under Apple menu > About This Mac.

Microsoft supports Office for Mac on a moving set of recent macOS versions. A Mac that can run an Office app today is not proof that every older or future macOS/Office combination is supported.

3. Check the operating system and hardware

Record:

  • Windows or macOS version.
  • Processor architecture.
  • Installed memory.
  • Free storage.
  • Display resolution if the device is old or unusual.
  • Internet availability for installation, redemption, activation, and periodic licensing checks.

Microsoft’s current Office 2021 consumer requirements list Windows 11 for the supported Windows column, a 1.1 GHz two-core processor, 4 GB RAM, 4 GB Windows disk space, and a 1280 × 768 display. Mac requirements and supported macOS versions differ. These are Microsoft’s general suite requirements, not proof that a retailer’s particular key covers both platforms.

Check the live Microsoft requirements table.

4. Identify the account that owns or manages Office

Office may use:

  • A personal Microsoft account.
  • A work or school account assigned by an organization.
  • An account associated with a one-time Office redemption.
  • A subscription account that controls licensing and services.

Microsoft says an account is commonly used to install and activate Office, manage subscriptions or one-time purchases, reinstall apps, and access cloud services. If a new product key is redeemed through Microsoft’s standard consumer setup flow, remember the Microsoft account used: the product may be associated with that account for later installation.

Read Microsoft’s account explanation.

Never enter a key into an account you do not intend to use long term until the seller’s instructions and product terms are clear.

5. Write down the apps you need

Create a must-have list rather than buying by year:

  • Word
  • Excel
  • PowerPoint
  • Outlook desktop
  • OneNote
  • Access
  • Publisher
  • OneDrive storage
  • Desktop apps versus browser-only apps

Office Home & Student, Home & Business, Professional, Professional Plus, Standard, and Microsoft 365 plans can contain different apps. Office 2021 does not automatically mean Outlook or Access is included.

6. Check existing Office installations before adding another

On Windows, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and record every Microsoft 365, Office, Visio, Project, Access Runtime, language pack, or standalone Office app.

Microsoft says that, in most cases, subscription and non-subscription Office versions cannot run together on the same PC. Mixed 32-bit and 64-bit Office products cannot be installed together. Standalone apps, MSI installations, Remote Desktop Services, and older versions add further constraints.

Do not uninstall anything until you know:

  • Which license/account is currently active.
  • Where the installer comes from.
  • Whether you can sign in and reinstall the current product.
  • Which files and Outlook data require backup.
  • Whether the new product can coexist with what is installed.

Review Microsoft’s side-by-side installation guidance.

7. Compare the seller’s offer with your record

The offer should explicitly match:

Your requirementOffer field that must answer it
Fixed release or subscriptionProduct mechanism
Exact appsSuite or plan name and included-app list
Windows or MacPlatform
One or more devicesDevice allowance
Personal or organization-managed useAccount/license terms
Country/regionRegion
Key redemption or account loginDelivery and activation path
Required durationDuration and end behavior
Reinstall/recoveryAccount association and recovery terms
Failure handlingSupport evidence and remedy policy

If any decision-changing field is missing, ask before purchase. Do not fill the gap with assumptions from a different Microsoft suite or plan.

Lifecycle check

As of July 19, 2026:

  • Microsoft Office 2019 support ended October 14, 2025.
  • Microsoft Office 2021 support ends October 13, 2026, with no extended security updates.
  • Microsoft 365 support and features depend on an active eligible plan, supported operating system, and current service terms.

This does not mean every older app instantly stops opening. It means the support and security-update position changes, which matters before a new purchase.

Stop-and-check conditions

Pause if:

  • The offer names a year but not a suite.
  • The offer names Account but not the plan, owner/control model, duration, or recovery rules.
  • You need Mac support but the offer only says Office.
  • You need Outlook, Access, or Publisher but the app list is missing.
  • The PC already has a different Office architecture or version.
  • You do not control the Microsoft account needed for redemption or reinstallation.
  • The support lifecycle conflicts with the expected useful life of the device.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I see whether Office is 32-bit or 64-bit?

Open an Office app, go to File > Account, select About the app, and read the full version line.

Is the Windows version shown in Office Account?

No. Check Windows separately under Settings > System > About. Office Account shows Office product information.

Can I install 64-bit Office beside 32-bit Office?

Microsoft says Office products on the same PC cannot mix 32-bit and 64-bit architectures.

Does redeeming a key permanently tie it to the account?

In Microsoft’s standard consumer flow, a newly redeemed key is associated with the Microsoft account used for setup, and later installation uses that account. Exact license and transfer terms still depend on the product.

Next step

Complete the worksheet, then compare Office 2019, Office 2021, and Microsoft 365 access. Review an Access Land option only if its exact suite, plan, platform, device, account, duration, and region facts match your record.
